Car Noises and What They Usually Mean
A new noise is information. Describing when it happens is often more useful than describing the sound itself, because it tells us which system to look at.
Noises when braking
A high squeal when slowing down often points to worn brake pads. A metallic grinding usually means the pad material is gone and the rotor is involved.
Grinding while braking should be checked right away, not at your next oil change.
Noises over bumps or when turning
Clunks over bumps usually come from suspension or steering components. A click or pop while turning at low speed often points to a drive axle joint.
A hum or growl that changes with speed, not with engine rpm, frequently comes from tires or a wheel bearing.
How to describe it to us
Note whether it happens cold or warm, at what speed, while braking, turning, accelerating, or going over bumps, and whether it changes with the steering wheel.
