What Causes Uneven Tire Wear?
Tires record how a vehicle is being driven and how it is set up. Learning to read the pattern tells you what to fix before you buy the next set.
Common patterns
Both edges worn, center fine: chronic under-inflation.
Center worn, edges fine: over-inflation.
One edge worn: alignment angles out of specification.
Cupped or scalloped patches: worn shocks, struts, or other suspension parts.
Flat spots: hard braking or a brake system issue.
Simple habits that help
Check pressure monthly when the tires are cold, using the number on the door jamb sticker rather than the tire sidewall. Rotate on schedule and inspect for damage after pothole season.
If a new pattern appears quickly, have the alignment and suspension checked rather than just replacing the tire.
