Maryland Safety Inspection — Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Maryland safety inspection, and why do I need it?

It is a state-required safety inspection (MVA) to register most used vehicles in Maryland. It verifies your vehicle is safe to drive — brakes, steering, tires, lights and more. Without a passed inspection certificate, the MVA will not complete your registration.

2. When do I need it?

When you buy a used vehicle, transfer a title into your name, or move to Maryland and register your vehicle here. Brand-new vehicles do not need it at first registration.

3. Is it the same as the emissions test (VEIP)?

No — they are two different programs. The safety inspection checks that the vehicle is safe; the emissions test (VEIP) checks exhaust pollutants and is done separately, usually every 2 years. Passing one does not replace the other.

4. What do they check?

Among other items: brakes, steering, suspension, tires and wheels, lights and electrical system, wipers and glass, mirrors, exhaust system, fuel system and the vehicle's structure — all must meet state safety standards.

5. How much does it cost?

Sedan: $100 · SUV, minivan, family van & small pickup: $130 · Larger vehicles: up to $250. Final price depends on vehicle size.

6. How long does it take?

Usually about one hour, depending on the vehicle and the day's demand. Call or message us on WhatsApp to check availability before you come.

7. What should I bring?

Your vehicle and its registration or title information. That's it — we handle the rest, and the certificate is reported to the MVA electronically.

8. How long is the certificate valid?

90 days. Register your vehicle within that window; if it expires, the vehicle must be inspected again.

9. What happens if my vehicle does NOT pass?

You get the exact list of what failed. You choose where to repair it — and if you repair with us, we do it in the same shop. If you come back within 30 days (and under 1,000 additional miles), the re-inspection checks only the items that failed.

10. What are the most common reasons for failing?

Worn brakes, worn or damaged tires, burned-out lights, suspension or steering problems, and worn wiper blades. Many are simple, same-day repairs.

11. Can you repair what fails?

Yes. We are a full-service shop: we diagnose, repair and re-inspect in one place, so you don't have to run around.

12. Do I need an appointment?

Walk-ins are welcome, but we recommend calling or messaging us on WhatsApp first to confirm the best time.
